I saw a war movie, I think it was called To Hell and Back. It had Audy Murphy in it. I saw it when I was young, and so it made an impression on me. What I remember most from the movie was that, after most of the main characters had been killed off, and only Audy Murphy remained, he said that he didn't want to get to close to any of the new recruits because he knew what would happen to them.
I feel a little bit like that.
Every place I go I meet wonderful people. Wonderful! They are so friendly and happy and welcoming. We talk about such interesting things. It is so amazing to hear about how different people live in different places. You begin to feel differently about everything in your own life, like learning about a quirk in a person that throws light on their entire character. And then the morning comes, and your knew friends have dissapeared. They are gone. You will never ever ever ever see them again. If you am lucky you snagged their email address, but you know that such a link will lead to half-hearted communication that doesn't do our previous meeting justice. But most of the time, my new friends, from dissparate corners of the world, have gone.
Spencer has posted that he is going to the tour. While I would love to see the tour, were I passing through, I do not intend to expend resources in getting to it. In short, Spencer has gone to the tour, and I have gone with my new finnish friends to continue my study of the Croatian language. The plan is to meet Spencer in Austria in a couple of weeks. So, for all you out there, there will be two different "threads" occuring on the blog. Spencer's sojourn to the tour, and my continuing mishaps in Croatia.
I am extremely happy right now. My trip has been everything I hoped it would be, minus the biking. I am also occasionally very sad.
Such is the way of things.
Also, hello Mineko. It is nice to hear from you. I hope all is well. You should keep posting like that, it makes me want to write more.

Hello Rhys, this is Alex and I'm back from Brazil. I totally understand your feelings about meeting people and maybe never seeing them again. I've spent a week and a half traveling with several folks with whom I may not cross paths with again. Such is life. I've been able to understand most of your rants in Croatian. Good for you. Enjoy. Dovidenja. Alex.
Hi Rhys. I am enjoying your postings so much. I especially enjoyed the one on Dubrovnic --I think. It started off with Day 1--10: Wow amazement at everything, then went downhill from there. That was such a good introduction. Vovo would be so proud of you. Your new friends-for-a-day must be such a great experience. You'll remember them for a long time, and you can be sure they"ll also remember you. Gramma
Hi Rhys. Are you still in Sarajavo? If you are,you might consider going to Medjugorje, I believe not far from there. The Blessed Virgin is said to have appeared to some children there over a period of years. Supposed to be very inspirational, though it has not been approved by the Church. Just a thought. Wnere ever you are, Enjoy! Love, Gramma.
i love gramma, she's so cute. i'm sorry i've fallen behind in reading your posts, but i'm at work now so I can catch up on it here. it was cool because right after I read your post on sarajevo i found out that i was going to be doing a class presentation on what happened there and during the rest of the breakup of yugoslavia, and it was really cool to contrast your experiences you wrote about being there and staying with the guy whose basement had been completely blown away in the war, and then studying the war itself and the siege of sarajevo. were you able to explore the rest of that city? -love, min
